In the couple hours that you got to work with Google Docs for this class you barely got to see the incredible level of awesomeness that Google has to offer. The recent addition of Google Drive makes saving, organizing, and sharing all types of files "on the cloud" on the cloud easier than ever before. What are your thoughts about Google Docs now that you have had a little bit of time to explore it? Does Google Docs have value to you as an educator? What are some ways you could use Google Docs either as an organizational tool or with your students?

Just wanted to post a reminder to make sure you post to the very first blog called Welcome to Class. I'm updating grades today (7/20) so please check Moodle by this evening. I think some of you have skipped around which is fine, but it does make it a little bit more difficult for you to remember which activities you still need to complete.
ReplyDeleteQuestion - when I was making my google doc I tried to drag over a picture from the research tab but all it drags over is the link. Is that all we can do or am I doing it wrong? I think when collaborating with others it is nice to do the doc in google so that no matter where you are you can access the file and make changes. This also saves you from not having the same program and not being able to open the document. I would like my students to do projects and assignments in google doc but not sure how to go about having an account. Should I have general accounts to pass from student each year, their own account, or have them make the docs under my account? Thoughts on how you would set it up. I think if they did assignments on google then I wouldn't have to worry about what computer they saved on or messing with flash drives. Anyway here is the document I was messing around with.

Mrs. M.,
ReplyDeleteYou are from Creek Valley, right? As long as you are at a school that is a member of the GNENC consortium then you have a school Google and Moodle account. Let's visit at the Boot Camp. Perhaps this should be a point that I cover with the large group at some point?
I've used Google docs in the district and in some other classes. This section showed me a different side of Google docs. There are so many amazing templates! As far a information sharing, I think I would choose to use a wiki. It had more of an open and easy format. This is great for having a great looking finished product with many peoples input. I used this to make a picture album. Doing this again I would probably use PowerPoint.
ReplyDeleteThis is the beginning of my album. I am only edited the first two pages of the template so far. :)

Is anyone else having trouble posting to the class blogs?
I have been using google docs for several years, but have not been using them to their full potential. I have never seen the templates before and am looking forward to spending more time looking through them and coming up with different uses!
ReplyDeleteThe idea of using a google document during a class or meeting so that if you miss something, there is the chance of getting that information from someone else is intriguing. I wonder how it would work with students??? I can also see sharing this with my English teachers as a way to edit research papers in a paperless environment or even creating a group research paper.
I am thinking of creating a "fix it yourself" document. Whenever I have a technology problem, I will add it to a document with the steps to fix the problem. Then if a teacher has a technology issue and I cannot help them in a timely manner, they can go to the "fix it" document and see if there is a solution there for them.

Great ideas! The templates are fantastic, aren't they! I rarely remember to look at them, but when I do I usually find exactly what I'm looking for.
DeleteI think Google Docs are a great thing. A great way to work with others on a project, and you don't have to leave your room, or your house to get the project done.
ReplyDeleteI have used Google Docs a lot to help my students with their notes. I used it a lot when I worked with a young man in a wheelchair. I typed his notes into Google Docs, shared them with him, and he could review them each night after class.
I like the aspect that its a cloud base and you can access it anywhere. I have used the moodle platform in my DL class but I think I will integrate google in as well. I like that we can comment and highlight on the project for fast feedback to the students. I might really push our district to use Google docs for lesson plans, the paperless environment is the way to go.
ReplyDeleteOur district uses Google Docs to share documents we are working on as a district. I can see using them more with students as I gain more knowlege on what Google Docs can do. I like that students can have comments on their writing. That includes parents.
ReplyDeleteOne aspect that was frustrating for me was the internet connection. I had trouble getting images and creating a link. The site kept freezing or was unavailable.
Google Docs are okay. My former district used them for a variety of things. I even created the spreadsheet that we used for lunch count. If you are collaborating they definitely serve that purpose. And I think students might enjoy this feature. But as far as trying to make a document I still rely on Microsoft. There are so many more tools available there. I also teach the Microsoft Office Suite, so I know these programs inside and out. To do the same thing with Google Docs takes me twice as long - if there is even a tool available. Google Docs can be used to take notes at a meeting/conference (but so could Word). There is the “in the cloud” advantage, but Digital Dropbox does that.
