VoiceThread

Digital storytelling can be one of the most exciting things your students can do. VoiceThread is just one of so many tools that can be used for making exciting and engaging stories. The great thing is that it can be used with students of all ages! What are some ways you could integrate either VoiceThread or some other video or animation application into your lesson plans? What are some creative ways you think this could be used in your classroom?

Please share a link to the VoiceThread you created in your reply to this post. If you have some time please leave a comment on that someone else created just for practice.

  1. After spending some time with VoiceThread and then actually creating my own, I am hesitant to share this with too many of my teachers. I felt like I was spending too much time on the how does it sound or what do I look like parts instead of really worrying about what the content was.

I think that VoiceThread would work best in an out of class assignment such as an independent reading book report or even an extra credit assignment. Another good place would be in speech practice so that the person giving the speech could get constructive criticism before giving the final product. I'm not sure where I could add this into the library world-maybe a group book discussion???

I too often hear teachers say that they just don't have time to get all they want done anymore and I don't see this as a form of technology that would actually help them with that problem. If an adult like me is distracted by the fluff and forget the content, a high school student would surely be bogged down very quickly as well.

    1. VoiceThread is one of my all time favorite tools. I don't use it as often as I should but it is a GREAT way to give all students a voice...literally! Imagine having each student in a class create a slide where they talk about something that is a tradition in their family. This might be things like going to the opening day of baseball season, swimming at the local pool during the summer or touching the roof of a car when driving through a tunnel. Their teacher could find teachers around the world that are willing to have their students comment on these traditions and share traditions of their own. Sort of like 21st century pen pals!

Students spend so much time online that they really don't obsess over being on camera. It is second nature to them to be "on camera." It isn't as easy for most adults!

  2. I thought VoiceThread was a fun tool. I could see the students really using this tool in class projects. What I liked the most about this program is the comment tool. The students could critique other students on their projects. Interface was user friendly. Can you upload videos? We do a lot of projects using imovie. If the students can upload their videos and have there peers comment on the movie that would be awesome. I could use this in one of my World History projects where the students are shown a picture of a famous person of WWI. They have to guess the person and their involvement during WWI. The comment tool would be used for answering their guess and involvement.

  3. My teammate, librarian, and I worked together to extend two of our writing projects. We used still pictures and their voices reading their stories. This is an easy way to take those projects one step further. It did take me awhile but I think practice will speed that up. Could also be a great link on my school website explaining homework or just making it more personal and warm.

  4. That was so much fun! I don't have a microphone or webcam on my computer and I really had to fight the impulse to go out and buy one. I talked myself out of it by reminding myself that I can get one later and edit this voice thread. The voice thread that I made was to show to the incoming fourth grade to give them an idea of what to expect at flowerfields. I think it is better to show them some pictures of previous trips so that they can get a better understanding rather than have me just talk about it. I browsed through the different threads out there and saw some great ways to use this with class assignments. I think I would want to plan the assignments out so that I could do them in one month period and get the teacher $15 per month rather than the $60 per year but we'll see. Last year I had the students do a video ad that I taped and I was a little worried for my shy students but everyone stepped up and many really hammed it up so I don't really see there being a big problem with students worried about how it will sounds or look.

  5. I think this is another great tool that could be used with students for projects. I find it to be a web version of PhotoStory 3, which is nice because you don't have to have it saved on a flash drive. With VoiceThread, you have access to it anywhere you have web access.

I agree with some of the other posts above, you can get too involved with how do I sound, how do I look. If you can get past that part, and remember that this is not going to be a professional presentation, but a tool to use in your classroom, I feel it can be a great tool for use in class.

  6. I put off doing Voicethread, thinking it was too hard. Once I got started I was amazed at how easy it is. This will be a great tool to use with sharing projects with parents and their family. I love that people can post comments.

  7. I think this would be a fun tool for students. While I hate the thought of “being published” via voice or video, most students love these opportunities. As I watched the first tutorial I thought this will be easy enough to accomplish, I was wrong. Uploading my photos took forever; in fact, as I write this I am still waiting for my photos to upload. I have stopped and tried one at a time, but I still don’t even have one photo uploaded. So I decided to write my review. Yeah, finally one photo. Back to no photos as I had to restart my session. I guess you can only upload one photo at a time, not even two or three. This is a pain.

So once the photos were uploaded it was easy to add comments. But I would like to see all comments attached to a photo, so I can change the order of the comments and change the font size of text comments. Also, I saw where there were text comments at the bottom of the picture. Is there a way to position comments at different places? Now I am waiting for to put a title and description on my VoiceThread. Maybe this won’t be something I use at school.
